If you have adult male and female koi, they can spawn anytime between April and August. When they spawn depends on the temperature and amount of daylight. A warm spring will make the spawning season start earlier, while cold weather will delay it. Koi usually look for a good place to lay their eggs, such as plants, roots, or algae. Since most koi ponds don’t have these, the koi might not spawn at all, or they might try to lay eggs on the pond walls. Spawning uses a lot of energy, and without soft surfaces, the koi could hurt themselves on the hard edges of the pond.
Spawning brushes are a great option, especially when your koi don’t have natural plants to lay eggs on.
